Apple Vs. Nvidia
Nvidia will soon be worth more than Apple by 2025, experts believe. But what makes experts say that? For one, it is majorly because of Nvidia being a leader in AI and hardware - specially Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) — the engine that powers the world of Machine Learning (ML).
However, this development didn’t happen overnight. One can only wonder why and how a giant like Apple with a market capitalization of 3 trillion USD reached this stage. In today’s video, we’ll explore just that.
To understand how Apple and Nvidia became competitors, it’s important to understand the journey of these arch-rivals. Apple first used Nvidia’s GPUs in its Macs back in the early 2000s. This was a big deal for Nvidia. It helped it gain trust, loyalty and increase its overall customer base.
However, the seeds of the relationship shared by Nvidia and Apple going off on a tangent were sown soon after in the mid 2000s. Reason? A delay in Nvidia’s GeForce 8600 Ultra GPUs impacted the release of Apple’s 30-inch Cinema Display.
In the 2010s, both parted ways because Apple faced performance issues in the Macs it released using chipsets manufactured by Nvidia. This was the final nail in the coffin. It got dirty, leading to legal lawsuits.
Apple soon realized that it needed to enhance its in-house manufacturing, taking full control of its hardware and software.
